The still-unfolding tragedy at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah has once again focused national attention on the dangers of underground coal mining. Even the ongoing rescue attempts have been anguishing.

The mine claimed the lives of three rescue workers Aug. 16 and further delayed the search for the six trapped miners. The initial collapse occurred two weeks ago Monday.
