When using an employer-owned computer or cell phone or camera, we know who owns the hardware - but who owns the information or words or pictures generated within?

Common sense says the employer does, certainly when it's work- related. But what if employees have been given official leeway to occasionally use the gadgets for personal communication? And what if that communication devolves into sexually explicit text messages with romantic partners?
