A plan to reduce the number of teams in the Manhattan Beach Open has been shot down by the City Council and players alike, who chafed at the idea of changing the volleyball tournament's historic draw.

The Manhattan Beach City Council told the Association of Volleyball Professionals on Tuesday that it does not support a "Crocs Cup Shootouts" series, which would cut the number of qualifying seeded men's and women's teams from 32 to 16.
