Long before Media Arts Academy in Hawthorne lost its charter for missing a renewal deadline, the Centinela Valley Union High School District had warned campus officials of several violations in the terms of their charter.

The district claims the 160-student school, nicknamed Hip-Hop High, was not authorized to focus on a curriculum based on the music business; failed to provide various accountings, budget and attendance logs; and violated state law by holding meetings via teleconference.
