Summary
When the Getty Center's central garden opened to the public in December 1997, I interviewed Robert Irwin, the garden's designer. When he received the commission he was a renowned artist, but knew little about horticulture. However, by the time the garden opened, he had undertaken a crash course in botany, visiting specialty nurseries with plant experts up and down the Southern California coast to be sure his choices would survive.
Now, 10 years later, he revisits often, making adjustments as needed, and the garden has blossomed into a magnificent, mature work of art, just as he envisioned.See the full content of this document
