Summary

Q.: I was taking Coumadin as a blood thinner and I had a blood clot in my left leg. I was supposed to take the Coumadin for six months but the doctor told me to stop after three months. What other medications can I take?

A.: There is no good replacement for Coumadin at this time, although several drugs are now in Phase II studies and appear quite promising. Aspirin, one tablet daily, is better than nothing and offers some protection. The real issue is what caused the clot and are you predisposed to this recurring. Several diseases predispose to forming blood clots. You should ask your doctor if you are predisposed. There are several inherited factors that predispose to clotting that can be excluded with blood tests performed after Coumadin is discontinued.
