Walter Shields died suddenly on Sept. 14 at home in Torrance at age 86. Shields, whose real name was Wladziu Szulc, was born in Poland, but got out with his parents before the Germans showed up hungry.
His father later became a percussionist for the Boston Symphony while Walter went on to play trombone for Ray Anthony, Charlie Spivak and - during World War II - the Army Band.See the full content of this document
