Summary

What are actinic (solar) keratoses?

These are precancers of the skin, a small percentage of which can become true skin cancer. They consist of small scaling, red, tough areas on sun-exposed skin, mainly the face, ears, neck, hands and arms. Treatment is office-based and usually is quite simple and very effective. Treatments consist of liquid nitrogen, various creams or, rarely, surgical removal. They should be treated so as not to become skin cancers.
