Basketball Great Kareem Abdul-Jabber Discloses He has Leukemia

NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar disclosed in an interview published today that he suffers from a rare form of leukemia, but the Lakers legend said his long-term prognosis is very good. The 62-year-old Abdul-Jabbar revealed during an interview with the Los Angeles times Monday that he has Philadelphia chromosome- positive chronic myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that produces cancerous blood cells.

Lawndale Woman Celebrates 100th Birthday

Lawndale. Lawndale resident Olga Maria del Socorro Leets turns 100 years old today. She was born on Nov. 11, 1909, to Nicaraguan statesman Juan Leets and his wife, Bernabela Castillo, in Granada, Nicaragua. Olga was the fifth of eight children - she has four brothers and three sisters. During her school years, she attended Catholic school in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. While in her 20s, she married Octavio Solorzano. They had two daughters and divorced three years later.

Man Who Shot Himself at Angels Gate Park Had E-Mailed Friends

A man who shot and killed himself at a San Pedro park was reportedly sending e-mails to friends before he took his own life, police said Tuesday. The 44-year-old man shot himself around 7 a.m. Monday inside a bunker at Angels Gate Park near 36th and Gaffey streets, according to Craig Harvey, a spokesman for the Coroner's Department.

Homeless Man Who Died in Fire Identified

A homeless man who was found dead in a burned-out shack near Carson was identified Tuesday. The man was Armando Ramirez Ibarra, 41, of Carson, said Ed Winter, assistant chief of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Department. Ibarra was found in the improvised shack in a field near the Harbor (110) Freeway and 190th Street, near the Carson-Los Angeles border, at 10:20 a.m. Sunday.
